A large number of people took to the streets of Downtown El Paso in a fight that took place in the early morning hours this past Sunday. Police have said that several of those arrested are members of the UTEP football team.

Betti Flores Pleads Guilty

UPDATED MONDAY JULY 9 ... Former County Commissioner Betti Flores pleads guilty to multiple charges of trading votes for cash. The issues involve land sales, the contract for the El Paso County Parking Garage Annex, and other Commissioners Court activities. Also in her plea, charges related to the Thomason Hospital bond. The hospital had a news conference Monday to discuss the issues.

Former Housing Authority of El Paso CEO Pablo Salcido has filed a lawsuit against his former employer. He wants more than $200,000 in back pay, and he’s raising questions about Housing Authority contracts and the relationships between board members and vendors.

One battle in the FBI public corruption investigation is the government’s motion to disqualify noted El Paso attorney Mary Stillinger from representing three clients the U.S. Attorney states are “targets.” Stillinger replies that the government is fishing for information, and in a footnote claims that other lawyers will face similar disqualification motions.

The El Paso Housing Authority Board is back in the business of finding a new leader for the agency. The agenda for its meeting today shows discussion and possible action on hiring a CEO. Meanwhile, the interim director has resigned, and the former CEO, the subject of fierce politicking in 2005, is considering a lawsuit against the agency.

Northeast city Rep. Melina Castro apparently is pursuing her case against City Attorney Charlie McNabb. Luther Jones, her attorney of record at the time, filed a notice of appeal March 19. Jones withdrew as attorney of record June 25 and was replaced by John Mobbs. The first briefs are due in early August.
