DOWNTOWN KIDSPALOOZA
FAMILY ART & MUSIC FESTIVAL

El Paso, Tex. - On March 28, 2009 from 10:30am to 5:00pm something quite extraordinary will happen in downtown El Paso -- children will take to the streets! Children along with friends and family will be boarding trolleys all over downtown to attend a multitude of places and happenings as they embark on a remarkable cultural cruise of downtown El Paso.

Saturday, March 28th is the day of the second annual “Downtown KidsPalooza” -- an event you will not want to miss. From the magnificent Plaza Theatre to the newly renovated Cleveland Square, to the Insights Museum, historic Union Plaza and Lynx Exhibits, cultural experiences will be but a trolley stop away.
A group representing El Paso’s prominent downtown arts organizations has come together to collaborate on this one day fun-filled family event that includes:

Children’s Concerts ? Art & Music Workshops ? Dinosaurs & Robots
Dancers, Puppet Shows & Live Theater ? Games & Activities ? Music & Science ?
Explore Locomotive Bells & Whistles ? Live Music ? Food & Drinks

From 10:30am to 5:00pm families will have opportunities to experience concerts, workshops and activities provided by the partners of Downtown KidsPalooza. Free trolley rides will be available to take you from one stop to another.


SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITES

The El Paso Diabetes Association begins the day with a Family Fun Walk at 8:30am (1mile & 2mile routes) starting in front of Lynx Exhibits, 300 W. San Antonio Street. For Information and registration call (915) 532-6280. Day registration also available.

The El Paso Symphony Orchestra presents two interactive children’s performances of Brother Grimms “Rumpelstiltskin” (12:00pm and 2:00pm at the Plaza Theatre). Tickets for these concerts are $10 reserved and $5 general admission. Call (915) 532-3776 to buy your tickets today.

Through the community arts program the City of El Paso Museums and Cultural Affairs Department will provide performances and educational workshops throughout the day including Manos Arriba, puppet show at the Downtown Public Library, Main Auditorium; Capoeira Quinto Sol (Brazilian dance/martial arts/acrobatics), Danzas Espanolas (flamenco troupe) and Ceiba (Latin American/Indigenous Music) groups will be performing throughout the day at different locations.

The City of El Paso Parks & Recreation Department will turn Cleveland Square into an all day Fun Activities Zone with arts and crafts booth featuring “Green” projects, face painting and games. Giant Bubbles and “Twister” will be featured. Join the Parachute, sack and tug of war competitions all day.

Insights El Paso Science Museum will take you on a tour of the Dinosaurs exhibit. Four science shows (Magic Bubbles, Tesla Coil, Ice Bubble and Hydrated Gel) will be going on throughout the day. Crafts and “Hands on Take Home” projects will be at different stations. Admission to Insights on this day is $5 Adults; $4 Senior and Military; and $3 for Children ages 4 to 11.

Kids will learn how to draw Locomotive No. 1 and other train cars at the Railroad & Transportation Museum of El Paso. In addition, kids will explore the sounds and vibes of streetcar and locomotive bells and train whistles, learn how to make music with pipes, and learn railroad songs.

Take a tour of the historic Union Depot. A Railroad Man and Harvey Girl will be on hand to take you on a tour of the station, passenger service and Exhibit of Harvey House.

Experience a full day of robotic action and displays at Lynx Exhibits. Meet Rodney Copperbotton see the Border Patrol’s Operation Pride Robot, visit NASA’s “Robonaut” and experience the exciting new exhibit “ROBOTS: The Interactive Exhibition” at a discount. Admission on this day is $5 and under 3 years of age is free.

The City of El Paso Downtown Public Library will be the place to be featuring three performances by Kids Excel. Wear your sneakers and learn some fun new moves. Kids Excel will hold interactive demonstrations using music and dance. Ages 7-12 and parents too! From 2:30pm to 4:30pm in the Children’s section of the library kids can make their own Maracas and join the Drum Circle. The film WALL-E will be shown at 11:30am and 1:30pm in the Maude Sullivan Room free of charge.

Creative Kids will be offering two "make and take" workshops. The first session will be from 11:00am to 1:00pm and the second session from 2:00pm to 4:00rpm at the Creative Kids OLP Gallery, 504 San Francisco Street. Workshops will work on the theme of KidsPalooza day integrating art and music. A minimal fee will be charged for materials and will include snacks. Visitors will also be able to view the artwork of the youth in the Creative Kids programs. Call 533-9575 for more information.

The El Paso Convention and Performing Art Centers will have two tours (3:00pm and 4:00pm) of the Historic Plaza Theatre. Tours are free.. Food, snacks and beverages will be on sale throughout the area.
