ALUMNI, HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR TO SPEAK AT CHAPTER GALA
The El Paso Chapter of the UTEP Alumni Association will honor 1969 graduate Dr. Edith Eger at its annual Fundraising Gala Dinner at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, March 29 at the Tomas Rivera Conference Center, Union Building East, Third floor.
Eger is a psychologist and author who has turned the lessons she learned as a Holocaust survivor into inspiration, helping others empower themselves.
At the age of 16, Eger and her family were sent to a Nazi concentration camp where her parents lost their lives. Soon after seeing her mother go to the gas chamber, Eger was tapped to dance for Dr. Josef Mengele, the German officer and physician known as the "Angel of Death."
Eger was saved in 1945 when an American soldier noticed her hand moving slightly among a number of dead bodies.
Now a much sought-after motivational speaker, Eger has a clinical practice in La Jolla, Calif., and holds a faculty appointment at the University of California, San Diego.
Eger has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show and was the primary subject of a Holocaust documentary on Dutch National Television. She was honored as El Paso?s Woman of the Year in 1987 and received the California State Senate Humanitarian Award in 1992.
