Imagine 1000 photographers in both El Paso and Juarez taking a single day and documenting their lives and their cities. That is the idea behind Dos Mundos/Mil Lentes -Two Worlds / A Thousand Lenses.
Photographers from all over the region will be invited to participate on one 24 hour period from noon August 9th to noon August 10th 2008. What is El Paso like at 3:00AM in the morning? How about Juarez 9:45 in the morning, or midnight? Photographers will be asked to look at the world around them and make a statement about where they live through pictures. We live in two worlds, but we really live in one. Thus the title Dos Mundos (DM/ML).
The collected photos from all of these photographers will become part of an exhibit ?Dos Mundos? which will work it?s way around various venues around the area.
The project will benefit local charities on both sides of the border, as the charities will have complete creative use of the images for a period of one year. All exhibits of the images will benefit the charity as well.
The Dos Mundos project is loosely based on the many successful "A Day in the Life" series of photo projects that were popular in the late 1990s. A Day in the Life of Africa, America, Japan, Soviet Union and Israel were all coffee-table book best sellers. There even was one called Texas 24/7 in which several local photographers were featured.
Several years ago a group of UTEP photographers did a silmilar project showcasing their own photgrp
DM/ML draws on the renewed popularity of photography in general, and digital photography in particular. Only digital images will be allowed, and all images must have been taken in a specific 24 hour period: noon to noon August 9 to 10. Almost everyone in El Paso has a digital camera, if not a formal one, at least on their cell phones.
For those interested in helping, there wil be an organizational meeting for Dos Mundos on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at 7PM at Lighthouse Coffee 3021 McRae Blvd
There will be a small entry fee for all photographers that again, will be donated towards charity.
