El Paso's music scene is being suffocated by near-sighted venue owners.
Owners prefer booking cover bands, which are more profitable in the short term. They're making a quick buck at the expense of developing loyalty and support for musicians who put effort into crafting their own songs.
It's tough to find original bands on weekends. The various concert listings around the city don't specify whether bands play original music--so unless you do some hard research, you'll probably find yourself listening to covers.
Cover bands are fun to listen to, but they feel culturally devoid. They're essentially jukeboxes. People don't go to Mexico and eat Taco Bell to experience the culture. Similarly, for an authentic experience you have to hear an original band. Imagine going out to eat, but the only culinary options are nationally-owned corporate fast-food chains. The idea makes me shudder; synthetic music should make you feel the same way.
The problem isn't that cover bands want to play covers, but that doing so is practically required. A member of de facto 80's cover band Ulysses talked to me via MySpace. He said, "The only reason we don't really play our own songs is that there really isn't a big scene for it here in El Paso. Once in a while--and if you're lucky--we'll throw in one or two. So the audience can say, 'Wow, they do write.' I've been writing since I was 10. And now, 31 years later, I'm still doing it. A lot of the songs I write were played on KLAQ, but things have changed there."
The musicians in town don't feel uninspired, they're just dismally unsupported. How many potential Mars Voltas have been starved out of existence?
If El Paso doesn't start taking pride in itself, our music scene will continue to stagnate: Bands will continue to feel forced by the venues to play unoriginal music to stay afloat; venues will continue to book cover bands because there is demand for it; and there will continue to be a demand for it because there is no pride and support for original music. It's a Catch-22 from which El Paso sometimes manages to slightly emerge, only to fall back into.
I'm a 22-year-old college student who used to be more involved in the local music scene, but college will crush a man's soul like that. For years, many of my friends have played in original and cover bands around town, so I've always maintained some connection with local music. Recently, I've gained a renewed interest for live music.
I wanted to check out some homegrown music this weekend, but just about every place in town is saturated with cover bands and DJs. Even the venues that do support originals seem to change their focus on weekends.
This particular weekend may not be indicative of the usual flow of things, but things aren't off by much. Bands have been telling me about this problem for a long time.
Here's the what I found for Saturday:
* Crash Kennedy at Badlands Billiards
* Metal show at Zeppelin's
* Jazz show at Mesa Street Grill
That's a pathetically small list.
If you know of venues that host original local bands on weekends, leave a comment. The original music scene needs to network and organize, or else we'll see more of the same. It's about time dusty ol' El Paso grew some grassroots.

oh the seeds of the grassroots have been planted. trust me. we work in grassroots everyday. one problem out of many has been the closure of a laundry list of venues; Q8, lucky devils, SPaG, and Ramblin to name a few.
Hush underground/gallery on Stanton. Jaime O.'s place.
Plenty of original music there.

This has been a chronic recurring problem in El Paso for a LONG time. The El Paso music scene is very cyclical and there are periods where the original music scene is very strong, with a lot of good bands and a lot of good places to play. There are other periods though where it seems all the places friendly to original bands close down and the good original bands are hard to find.
We happen to be in the middle of a dry spell, but it's not as if the local music scene has never picked up before. Nor does it mean that it never will pick up. All it is going to take is a spark from either a couple really good bands or a really good venue and things can get a lot better.

The problem really falls in the hands of these Local Venues who say the DO support the music scene, but really, they are just interested in making money, and that is the sad truth. There are a handfull of Great Original Acts, but they cannot be heard like they should because people are blind to the fact that we even HAVE good talent. Now, go to L.A., Austin, Phoenix, and they will tell you that if you are a Cover Band, you will be treated like a Cover Band, but if you're Original, you are seen as RockStars...sad but true. And there are tons of clubs that will showcase these Original Acts. The majority of El Paso club & bar owners, yes the Majority, don't realize that what they are doing is really hurting the scene, how pathetic. Thats why all the good bars that do support are closing down, because people would rather go to places like Mavericks, who by the way have rejected Original Acts more than once, why, because, and I quote,"We dont want to lose money!".. and then people complain that there are not enough original bands in town. Another thing since we're on the subject, Ive seen cover bands with Egos the size of Mt. Rushmore, yet Ive met guys from Original bands, who just happen to be the most down to Earth People. Im not saying its always like that, but Ive compared these two groups of people, and well, its basically true but thats another subjectI can go on and on and on.............you get the picture.

Never understood the appeal of the cover band. The going to Mexico and eating Taco Bell thing is an apt metaphor. Maybe its the fact that music outside of the narrow available-in-the-jukebox category isn't appreciated. No, that can't be it. There is definitely a sizeable portion of this city that would show up to good original shows, they just don't exist. I check out Pollstar's page for El Paso and for the entire year, its.....ONE page. And it usually features some band called Fungi Mungle, and I have no idea who that is.

Okay Neil, perhaps you can suggest some "original" bands. The fact is that most bands play covers because only a few bands can constantly produce good hits. Most "original" musicians are too busy rehashing I-IV-V chord progressions with loud guitar jams covering up their lack of interesting chord progressions. Even sucessful bands are stuck in this rut. But then, as long as the amps are blasting your ears out, who cares about originality anyway?

Apperently the problem is that no matter what the subject, people will never come up with a solution. Take one of the comments below for example. Its not that Original Bands cannot write good music, and also, they don't just play I-IV-V chord progressions either, it seems you're not a Rock Fan, PERIOD. You just have to really know where and when good Local Bands perform. Take bands like ABNIK or 11:11 for example. These bands are just a few Original Rock Bands in El Paso, but they are what this city needs. Good entertainment is what we all want, and we're not getting it because El Paso is SO congested with Cover Bands. So to JIm Iholtz, you should get out more and you'll know what good Local Music is... but maybe you just don't like Rock N Roll or maybe you should get with the times!!

Ya pretty much hit it on the head. Theres some talent here, I know, ive played some pretty awesome shows here with some of em, its just like ya say, covers and the bookers and club owners are more in touch with that almighty dollar then with what the folks that are listening like. Its also a matter of a big town with a small town attitude, when the people start believing theres something worth listening to they just might snap out of it, but then again they would have to be convinced first. Need to start giving the original folks and what has become the outsiders of the scene a chance. I guess this is shameless self promotion now, lol, but if anything my music is heartfelt and original check it out herewwww.myspace.com/nikolaswilliams lol thanks for a well written and true article
