A fund-raiser this evening at Dominic's on Montana for 65th District Judge Alfredo Chavez. Why is this interesting? Well, partly because it reminds us that the campaign season is not yet over. [runoff background]

Also, largely, because of the listed guest, U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes. (See invitation via link at bottom of this story)

And why care that Reyes is a special guest of honor helping Chavez raise money?

Here's part of what appeared in The Inner Loop a few weeks ago. [npt, feb. 25, 2008]

"Chavez faced complaints of alcohol use and sexual harassment on the job. [county committee report]

"KVIA Channel 7 reporter Stephanie Valle brought up other items of controversy during his tenure. [valle commentary ]

"The county is suing LKG for return of more than half a million from the Border Children's Mental Health Collaborative, a federal grant program that through the county was contracted to LKG. [county lawsuit news release ] Chavez recommended LKG, whose principal, Sonny Garcia, has been linked to the FBI public corruption investigation, to the county."

Finally, and this might seem minor compared to the issues noted above, but Chavez took down from the "endorsements" section of his Web site lauditory letters sent to his office after a complaint by Max Higgs, a supporter of Chavez challenger Yahara Lisa Gutierrez. [higgs letter][chavez reply]

Speaking of Gutierrez, the Democratic Party calendar has her down for a fund-raiser at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Medallion's, 501 Texas.

Speaking of elections, it's not too soon to start talking mayor's race. City politics will heat up in earnest, or at least get the pan warm, starting after the May special election for City Council District 3 (some school and water districts in there as well). This from The Strelz chat forum, on the chances of Randy Bowling running for mayor. [strelz chat]
