It is estimated that about 80 percent of Latinos voted for then City Councilman now Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa when he first ran. I was in the 20 percent that didn't. Over the years I have treated the Mayor on my show as I have treated all elected officials or candidates regardless of their party affiliation or race. That is: when they do something good I encourage it and when they are doing dumb things I say so. I am -- in this order -- an American, a Latino , a progressive, and finally a Democrat.
I say this so that you can understand that my reaction to Rush Limbaugh's comment that he mistook Mayor Villaraigosa as a "shoeshine guy" is not a knee-jerk reaction based on partisanship. It is a reaction as an American of Latino decent that quite frankly is tired of the media's Latino rules.
As a member of the largest minority ethnic group and a member of the media, I am continually puzzled and outraged by the idea that anyone can say anything about Latinos without fearing any consequence. While it would be out outrageous for anybody to have said a similar thing about an elected official of almost any other ethnicity, Rush will certainly not receive any heat at all for supposedly "mistaking" the Latino Mayor of the nation's second largest city as a shoeshine guy.
There will be no national debate about whether he should step down as there was when Imus referred to a women's basketball team in a derogatory fashion. There will be no national outrage like there was following the racist vocal vomiting of "comedian" Michael Richards. There will be no slam down and painful lame excuses like those offered by Mel Gibson after his anti-Semitic comments. The rules for Latinos are different.
Rush, Lou Dobbs, and a host of shock jocks are well aware of this different set of rules. Dobbs & Rush Inc. can freely accuse Latinos of spreading Leprosy and TB, of raping children, and even planning the violent overthrow of the US, without any proof whatsoever.
While the silence around these comments is consistent, media heads are wrong to believe that they bring no negative impact. Someday, CNN will understand that most Latinos laugh when we hear the slogan " the most trusted name in news." Radio advertisers will eventually come to the realization that there is a correlation between radio market share loss, the growth of Latino populations in certain and important markets, and anti-Latino hate speech dominating the airwaves.
It seems that there is a growing consensus that we have moved past the stage of asking media figures to be removed for racism and sexism, a consensus of which I find myself to be a part. In place of firing Dobbs & Rush Inc., broadcast outlets must be pressured to increase racial diversity and diversity of opinion on their platforms. How those diversity standards are enforced should be voluntary. However if voluntary action is not taken now, future majorities may act legislatively. Broadcast outlets should remember that in America, shoeshine guys elect members of Congress and their sons and daughters sometimes even become them.

I am continually puzzled how, in the land of the free, people are expected to walk on eggshells whenever a member of a minority is around for fear of being called a racist. Your constant cries of "racist" are nothing more than a distraction from real instances of racism, you are the boy (no, I don't mean it like that) who cried wolf. Give it a freaking rest already, we're tired of hearing the sniveling.

Walking on eggshells? Real instances of racism? Its not difficult to discern that referring to a Latino politician as a 'shoe shine guy' is a racial swipe. Sure, it might be a nuanced one, but then again racism in this country has merely become more subversive, never eradicated.
If Villaraigosa happened to have been a white guy, do you think that quote would be the same, jeramie?

Bravo Mario for stepping forward and raising awareness of this issue. Latinos are under attack across the counrty, immigrants are being blamed for the economy, and people like Rush will continue to spread the hate if left unchecked.
This issue should be brought forward and debated. There are those who will say that we (latinos) are pulling the race card, but lets call a spade a spade.
Gracias Mario

Groups like La Raza are proof that the hispanics do not wish to intigrant into American society. It's pretty obvious that hispanics have a beef with the gringo. www.goodoleboybumperstickers.com

Oy vey! That tired stereotype of the Latino shoe-shine boy. Oh wait, that's not a stereotype I've ever heard of. Are you creating a new one Mario?
If you are going to tar Dobbs with the same brush as Rush, could you please give a concrete example of Dobb's anti hispanic racism.
I bet his hispanic wife and children would like to know about this.

Oh, that Rush Limbaugh - he gets away with virtual murder in the way he assassinates minorities, be they Mexican, African, Jewish, female - you name it, Rush Limbaugh has something to say about every last one of us. And, it ain't pretty.
So, Rush thought Los Angeles Mayor Anotnio Villaraigosa was a shoe-shine boy, huh? Well, good for Villaraigosa. At least he is in an honorable profession. It may not pay much, but it's worth doing well if it's worth doing at all. I know, I used to be a shoe-shine boy and I almost became a shoe-shine man, but it hasn't yet worked out.
When I was 12, 13, 14, thereabouts, I was a shoe-shine boy. I used to frequent the bars along Alameda Street offering my services to patrons, drunks, and sundry other El Pasoans from the barrio who enjoyed a cool one after a long day of hard work. I was young, but I was good. I never dirtied anyone's socks and I made sure to also shine the back of the shoe, because a shoe that doesn't have its back shined, is not a clean shoe.
Some of the men would joke with me. One guy, whom I'll never forget, asked me in Spanish: "Traes cafe?" I said, si senor because I did have brown shoe polish. But, of course, he meant did I have coffee. When I said, yes, he said, "pasame una taza (give me a cup). I was crestfallen, but the guy apologized and gave me a whole dollar so that I could make the sign of the cross as a gesture that would bring me luck.
Every patron wanted to know if I had made the sign of the cross. Devil that I am, I would tell them no because I knew it meant a bigger tip. So, yes, shining shoes is honorable. When I was 14, I worked for Frankie Marlboro at his E-Z Shoe Shine Parlor downtown. We were paid only in tips, but I was so good that I was able to save enough money to open my own bank account - at 14.
So, Villaraigosa shouldn't be offended because racist Rush Limbaugh called him a shoe-shine boy. It's certainly more honorable than cheating on his wife with a t.v. reporter and having the entire nation know it. Ah, politicians. How screwed up you are, yet, so necessary.

Mario,
Your article is so truthful and inspiring that I plan to forward it to Hispanic leaders here in Austin and to the leadership of organizations (LULAC, MALDEF, others) and recommend you do as well. Imus was correctly held accountable for his missteps when African American journalists and political officeholders came together to speak loudly with a unified voice. We Latinos must learn from their success and come forward, putting aside our natural inclination to be polite and turn the other cheek.

How can you possibly take a guy like Rush Limbaugh serious
he's just another media guy, He actually beleives he is the man.
He calles himself the Guru of this and the Guru of that. He clames to have, and teach his below everage crowd with Half a Brain and thats about right this is the mentality with which he preaches politics.
His nothing more than a drug addict. He hates Women he hates Hiliary,He hates Obama he even hates Mc cain and he is a member of his own party. This type of mentallity is to be ignored this guy is nothing more than a BIG mouth with only half a brain, what can you expect.

Joe,
True, all true re Rush Limbaugh; however, this "half a brain" has daily listeners on the radio who follow him like lemmings and this year, his "Campaign Chaos" has supposedly impacted the primary elections by telling his conservative listeners to cross party lines and vote for Hillary Clinton thereby securing the election for McCain in November. Still think he should be ignored?

Do you really beleive that his listeners have crossed party lines to change the outcome of the elections, I seriously doubt it. Its premature to prioritize a few changes in the process of the elections that half a brain has alledge to have conveyed to his listeners. The Reverend Wright is securing the fate of his college Obama, and of course Hilary put her foot in her mouth about getting shot at, and Mc Cain with a foot in the grave is not relevent of half of brains assertions. He lets his mouth overload his AH. I have listened to him before and just disregard most of what he presumes to know.

I do think Rush Limbaugh is wrong and that we should do something about it. I would listen to his show and determine who is advertising with him and call for all Latinos to boycott those items.
I just could not stand to listen to him for long enough to find out who his advertisers are. I would never listen to the guy!!!
However, I agree with Joe that shining shoes is a job that a person can be proud of doing. It is an honest job requiring hard work. I hope I can raise my two boys to understand the importance of having an honest, hard-working job in this world.
Great article.

Being compared to a slimy character like Antonio Villaraigosa is an insult even shoeshine boys should not have to tolerate.

With all due respect to Joe Olvera, whom I know, denigrating the art of show shining is besides the point. Villaraigosa is too easy a target due to his transgressions and for this reason, Rush Limbaugh barely exercised his vile mouth. The point is that any Hispanic who holds an elective office merits respect because the office commands it (respect) and any public individual who tears it down should be admonished. The information I shared in previous posts comes from listening to Limbaugh's radio program Monday thru Friday. Yes, I detest what and how he speaks but I listen to know firsthand how outrageous and damaging his words are. I'm not devious enough to fabricate the "Campaign Chaos" he created. I'm only an observant recorder in this case.
