Overview

On June 21, 2008 the City of El Paso’s Public Art Program and the Museums and Cultural Affairs Department will host an extraordinary event to attract and invite seasoned and emergent visual artists to use chalk to create works of art on the city sidewalks in downtown El Paso.

Chalk-the-Block will be a fun-filled event scheduled to host entertaining activities for people of all ages, including the outdoor appearance of the Art and Sol Project at Cleveland Square, a KIDZONE & an interactive chalk area, art vendors, live music and performances, great food, chalk art competitions, and much more!

Project Description

Individuals interested in producing chalk art may participate in the following categories:
• Chalk Art Competition
10 emerging artists will be selected to produce artwork on a 6x5 block that will be entered into a chalk art competition. Artwork will be judged by professional artists and participating sponsors, where prizes will be awarded to First, Second, and Third place winners.
• Individual Artist

7-10 professional artists will be selected to produce artwork on a block that may range in size. Selected artists will be compensated and given an honorarium of $100.00 to produce artwork on a block that may range from the following sizes: 9.5x10, 6x5, 7.5x10, and 10x5.5.
In addition to the submission requirements listed below, artists wishing to apply as an individual must turn in at least 5 sample images of past artwork, preferably large scale work that may be related to this current call for artists.

• Artist Team
3-5 artist teams will be selected to participate in groups of 5 or less. The selected teams will be compensated and given an honorarium of $100.00 to produce artwork on a block that may range from the following sizes: 7x10, 10x5.5, and 6x15.
*All selected participants will be required to attend a mandatory chalk art workshop prior to the event.

Each application must include the following for consideration to participate in Chalk-the-Block:

- Artist Application Form
- A sketch or drawing illustrating your proposed street painting will have to be submitted on a letter sized sheet (8.5x10) with a brief explanation of your design concept.
*Note: Artwork must be appropriate for public viewing and not be of any offensive nature. No advertising will be permitted on your images, including words and symbols. Only chalk pastels in a solid form may be used: No liquid pastels, acrylic paints, fixatives, etc. are permitted. Each artwork will include space for a festival sponsor logo or name.

Timeline

• Proposals Due: 5:00pm on Friday May 23, 2008.
• Finalist Selection: June 2, 2008

Selection Process

The City of El Paso Museums and Cultural Affairs Department will review proposals and select artists to be commissioned for the event.

If selected to participate, you will do so at no charge and be notified by June 2nd. *Note: if you are applying as an artist team, each member of the team must fill out the artist application form and select a team leader to turn in the group’s design proposal with all names printed clearly.

I, the undersigned artist (guardian if under 18), understand the aforementioned material and grant non-exclusive license and ownership of my artwork to the City of El Paso, including but not limited to display, merchandise, and reproduction of artwork. I confirm that I am the original creator of the proposed artwork, and have not copied anyone else’s designs and it does not infringe on anyone else’s intellectual property rights.
